My friend, Lenore Rowntree, is a fine example of those amazing people that I have been blessed to know and cross paths with over the course my life. Not unlike many of my besties, her ongoing accomplishments never cease to amaze me. Lenore is currently in the process of publishing her new book entitled “See ya later, maybe never…” This book explores a cultural norm and that is our understanding of sex and aging. As she is in real life, Lenore looks this issue straight in the eye with great candor and humor!

In the spirit of celebrating enriching, thought provoking, and powerful women, I caught up with Lenore for a 20-minute interview. What’s a holistic nutritionist talking about sex and ageing for? Well, both sex and aging are interconnected with health, wellness, and even nutrition.

Three key takeaways from the interview:

  1. Healthy attitudes and beliefs about sex are important for balanced wellness. Yes, feeling connected.
  2. As women age, they can begin to feel invisible. This sounds disconnected to me. Let’s set some healthy boundaries now so we can live in full sexual potential as we age.
  3. Sexuality can actually become better as we age. As Lenore teases in this interview, 103-year-old aunt Marion has some saucy secrets.

As I came away from the interview, I spent some time connecting these new ideas and learnings with what I know about health, nutrition, and wellness. I discovered that there are myriad benefits to putting some thought and energy into the topics of sex and aging.

Four benefits to sex as we age include:

  1. Regular sex improves heart health, according to this academic article
  2. Regular sex boosts immune function, according to this journal.
  3. Sex can soothe headaches, according to this article, offering a science-based rebuttal to the “not tonight, I have a headache…” excuse.
  4. Sex improves cognitive function. Sexually active people aged 50 to 90 years experience improved memory, according to this academic paper.

So there you have it, folks. There are health-based reasons to maintain a positive and healthy perspective when it comes to sex and aging. I hope this piques your interest in taking a deeper dive into this topic… starting with this wonderfully candid interview with Lenore Rowntree! It may very well be life-changing!
